About Us
Kebra Ethiopia Sound System was founded in 2005 under the name The Poor Man Movement; with the mission of serving our local community through music and cultural engagement.
In the early days, we organized events in the ghetto of Kwa Thema, offered entirely for free in exchange for non-perishable food donations.
Lekentle, the founder and selector has established a movement grounded in craft, conscious music and community. Ethel a visual and cultural artist, extends that work through design, documentation and storytelling, shaping the visual and educational language of the sound.
Kebra Ethiopia has spent the last two decades building an identity rooted in African self-determination.
The sessions named 'Survival' are a continuation of gatherings that were a response to oppression since the late 80's in the east of Johannesburg in Kwa Thema.
Rasta gatherings where reggae music, dialogue, community and food become tools of survival and connection.
